Tube Sculpture

Materials:

  • Used containers
  • packing and other nonrecyclable materials
  • art supplies
  • nontoxic glue and tape
Directions:

Artists sometimes use castoff objects, old car parts, and an assortment of things otherwise destined for the junkyard to create their sculptures. Check out your recycling bin the next time your child is in the mood for a sculpting project.

Gather up cardboard tubes, chunks of foam, nonrecyclable containers, and paper, as well as glue and tape. For a simple and stable sculpture, a younger child can use a cardboard box as a base, then attach other objects to it with the glue and tape.

For additional fun, suggest that your child incorporate a marble chute into whatever sculpture piece he or she is creating (keep a close watch on younger siblings). Perhaps you'll be in the vanguard of a new art form: Art de Chute.

Whatever kinds of sculpture pieces your child makes, line them up in the playroom so everyone can enjoy a good old homemade sculpture garden.
