The best thing about word games is that you can play along with your kids and still keep an eye on your cooking. Here's one that's sure to help your kids pass the time before supper.

Your child names a color, then you and he or she take turns naming representative foods. The color red, for example, might bring to mind "apple," "pomegranate," "rhubarb," and "radish." When all the colors are exhausted, you can use other categories, such as "sweet foods" or "foods that can only be eaten with a spoon."

You can also use non-food categories, such as kitchen gadgets, appliances, or other cooking-related items.

See who can come up with the most items in a category, the most unusual item, or even the most unusual category. To make the game even more exciting, try this rule: The first two examples you think of don't count!
