Distance = Rate x Time

Directions:

Engage your child in this traveling math challenge to pass the time and distance, at an enjoyable rate!

The game is based on the simple formula Distance = Rate x Time. For example, if you travel at 60 miles per hour for two hours, you will travel 120 miles, because 60 x 2 = 120. (The formula can also be expressed as Rate = Distance ÷ Time and Time = Distance ÷ Rate.)

To play, pose some problems based on your travel speed. For example, ask your child how long it will take to go 150 miles at 50 miles per hour. You can also relate the problems to mileage signs you pass: If your destination city is 90 miles away, how long will it take to get there at 60 miles per hour? For a twist, have your child include the time spent at rest stops to determine your average speed for the trip.

Now when he or she asks "How far is it?" you can answer, "Go figure!"
