Scavenger Hunt at 30,000 Feet

You can always count on airlines to provide you with free reading—and guessing game—materials.
Look through an in-flight magazine (or another publication that a family member has brought along) with your child. Make a list of about ten items for your child to find (don't let him or her see what you're jotting down). For example, you might find a tree, a blue sailboat, a woman with a suitcase, a dog, a man in a suit, an airline pilot, a map, an airplane, and so on.
If you're traveling with more than one child and you only have one copy of the magazine, your kids can work together as a team to find each item. Or, if each child has his or her own copy of the magazine, make separate lists so that your kids can work on the hunt individually.
For an added challenge, put a time limit on the hunting: a set interval of time or a time limit related to an unpredictable event (e.g., the pilot making an announcement).
Oops. Here comes the snack cart now—are your kids ready to hunt down a few peanuts?
