Sign Word Change
Directions:
"Ensuing egress 5,280 feet." You probably won't see this message on any road sign, but you will, no doubt, encounter the more familiar "Next Exit 1 Mile."
It's great fun to make up fancy renditions of road signs. The more outlandish the better, like "Telecommunications, Sustenance, BivouackingOutlet VII" for "Phone, Food, CampingExit 7."
Older kids will enjoy making word substitutions for road signs, truck signs, or building signs. The goal is to make the sign as zany as possible, while retaining the original meaning. (It's helpful, though not essential, to bring along a small thesaurus or synonym finder for this activity.)
For a variation, you can reverse this game by making up road signs using complicated words and having your children decipher them. Either way, parental units and offspring will relish a surpassingly diverting recreation!
