Tunnel Vision
Directions:
The changing world outside the window of a car or train provides a lot of things for your child to look at. This activity will enable him or her to get a different view of the scenery.
To play, all your child needs is a rolled-up piece of paper or a cardboard paper towel or toilet paper tube. Your child places the tube up to one eye, closes the other, and watches the passing scenery for a short amount of time (one minute is plenty). Then the child describes what he or she saw in as much detail as possible, based on the view through the tube. You might need to ask some questions to get the descriptions rolling, such as, "Did you see the red house?" You can also ask questions about things that weren't there—like a brown cow—and listen to the detailed descriptions of the phantom animal!
As a variation, have your child provide a running commentary as he or she watches the passing scenery through the tube. You can also vary the game by limiting how much the tube can be moved around. It will be a fun challenge for your child to describe unfamiliar territory from a decidedly narrow view.
