Vanity Plates

Vanity, thy name is license plates—if they're custom-designed by you and your fellow travelers.

Put your co-passengers to work creating vanity plates for cars, trucks, buses, bicycles, and other vehicles that you pass on the road. The plate might relate to the model or make of the vehicle, weather conditions, where you are, and so on. For example, "2COOL" might be the perfect plate for a convertible, especially if it's a windy day. And "PREZ" might be an appropriate license plate for an important-looking car you pass in Washington, D.C.

See whether family members can reach a consensus on the ideal vanity plate for each vehicle, or you can "attach" several plates to the same vehicle. Then, the vanity-plate creator draws a picture of the vehicle with its new vanity plate.

Alternatively, you can list vanity-plate slogans beforehand, either on the road or before leaving home, and search for a vehicle that's worthy of bearing each plate. How long will it take to spot a car that you can designate "NO1AUTO"?
