Weigh-In

Directions:

How much does the average bunch of bananas weigh? According to a youngster we know, it weighs in at just under twenty pounds!

You can test your child's knowledge of fruit and vegetable weights (and imagination) during your next supermarket trip. Simply ask your child to guess how much three tomatoes, a pineapple, an eggplant, or another fruit or vegetable purchase might weigh. Then put the item or items you're planning to buy on the scale and see how close your child came.

Another way to play is to tell your child the total weight of a fruit or vegetable that you need, and see whether he or she can guess how many items it will take to make up that amount. For instance, you might say, "We need a pound of onions. How many onions do you think that will be?" When playing with older children, you can relate the questions to some simple math: "The onions cost a dollar for three pounds. How many onions will be a dollar's worth?" See how your kids' produce-shopping skills weigh in!
