Guess That Sound
Materials:
- Common household items
Shhh, what's that sound? You and your child will certainly enjoy finding out. Close your eyes or turn your back and have your child find an item (either in the same room or another part of your home), then retrieve it. For younger children, you might want to preselect some unbreakable, kidsafe objects from which to choose. Your child then uses the item to make a sound, and you have to guess what the object is.
If you're stumped, ask for hints. For example, if your child is tapping the floor with your brown boots, he or she might say, "This is a sound that people sometimes make when they're walking." And if you need another clue, your child can add, "But you'd only hear this when it's snowing." Still haven't guessed it? Your child might then elaborate, "This came from your shoebox, and it matches your new jacket." Aha, you finally guessed it!
Then it's your child's turn: You choose an object and have your child guess what the sound is. For something that might sound really alien to him or her, how about the sound of running water (as in brushing teeth)?
