Here's a version of bingo sure to inspire a beginning reader or group of players while generating a few belly laughs.
Make bingo cards by drawing a four-by-four-square grid (for a total of sixteen squares) on a piece of blank paper or thin cardboard. Ask the players to list common words that you or they can write in the squares. Stick with words that appear frequently in children's storybooks, such as "for," "yes," "I," "go," "boy," and "girl." Be sure that the children place the words randomly so that every card is different.
Have the players cut bingo markers out of colored paper with safety scissors, then begin reading a selected story. The children then listen for the words on their cards and place a marker on each word that they hear. The first one who places four markers on his or her card in a straight line in any direction shouts bingo! When that happens, remove the markers, swap cards, and get back to the story.
