Earth to Space

Materials:

  • Tape recorder
Directions:

If your child is planning to take off into space in the near future, why not capture your two-way radio transmissions on tape?

While your child is traveling, turn on the tape recorder and document all of your conversations with the junior astronaut. Find out whether the takeoff went smoothly, what your child sees out the windows, what he or she is wearing, and so on. Also, have your child tell you the spacecraft's destination and what he or she expects to find there.

When your child arrives, have him or her tell you all about the landing site: what the weather is like, whether there are any living creatures (perhaps your child can interview one), what kind of food there is to eat. Then contact your child again on his or her trip home; if possible, stay in touch until he or she lands safely.

These taped conversations are the earthlings' only way of hearing about this space trip, so be sure the astronaut clearly transmits all the important news!
