Soup Scuba Diving

Directions:

Coming face-to-face with a three-hundred-pound, people-eating carrot would make anybody go goggle-eyed. That won't happen in your kitchen, of course—until you plug into your child's imagination.

As you chop food for the evening's meal, get your children thinking about what it would be like to strap on some scuba gear and go diving into a giant bowl of soup. As they begin their journey, they can tell you their adventures and the sights they see.

Feel free to jump in when your child slows down. You might say something about skirting a chunk of broccoli the size of a house. Or suggest sitting on a pea to enjoy the chunks of pepper drifting by.

Soup isn't the only dish that's fun to explore, of course. What about spelunking in fowl caves—venturing into the cavity of a big turkey or chicken that you're preparing to roast. Or, how about scaling the side of a ham? Watch out: Fall into the gravy boat, and you're as good as cooked!
