Follow Me
Directions:
This map game for kids with reading and arithmetic skills will reveal the best route from A to B and a great way to avoid backseat boredom.
To do this activity, you'll need two copies of the same map, preferably for the area you are driving through. Make sure the maps indicate the miles between cities or towns, or between exits. Give one map to your child and keep one for yourself. Starting at an easy-to-find location (point it out to your child), give travel directions based on the roads, landmarks, intersections, and mileage shown on the map (you might have to point out the mileage numbers on the various road segments).
For example, you might say, "Take I-80 west for fifteen miles; take Route 4 north to the next town; take Route 11 toward the lake for seven miles." Then ask your child where he or she is on the map, and see if you have both "arrived" at the same location!
As a variation, have your child pick the route for you to follow. You can point out a destination on the map and have your child give directions to get there.
Just follow the directions to fun ahead!
