Line Races
Directions:
Isn't it about time you learned to pick the fastest checkout line at the supermarket? Perhaps, with the help of your child's keen eye for detail, you can.
Ask your child to predict which line will move the fastest and explain why. Perhaps the express line, which is the longest, is still the best bet because customers have the fewest purchases. Or maybe the cashier in aisle six has the shortest line, and is working at warp speed, so her line is sure to move the most quickly. You might choose the line your child recommends, or pick another as a "control" and see whether or not your child was right.
Your child can also officiate at a "Line Olympics." While you're waiting in line, your child can keep an eye on two different lines (the ones on either side of yours), and predict which line will move the fastest. The easiest method is to keep an eye on customers in specific positions (say, the fourth person in line), and see which ones pay for their purchases first.
Hmm, do you think that couple with four grocery carts will ever get through the line?
