The Dictionary Game
by Amy McMahonDictionaries have some funny words in them. Playing this game will expose your child to new words, and give him an opportunity to flex his creativity.
Age: 8 through adult
At least 4 players are needed to play this game.
Materials Needed:
· A dictionary
· 10 small pieces of paper per player
· Pens/pencils
· Envelope
How to Play:
1. Divide the players into equal teams.
2. A player for the first team picks an unusual word from the dictionary.
3. All players, including the one with the dictionary, write a definition for the word on a slip of paper. Players try to make up crazy, silly, or semi-believable definitions, depending on their mood. The player with the dictionary writes the real definition (it can be summarized or rephrased).
4. A player from the opposite team gathers all the slips of paper into an envelope. Then, this player reads the definitions, numbering each one.
5. All players, except the one with the dictionary, vote on which definition they think is correct.
6. The second team keeps track of the definition each player voted for. Each player who voted for the right definition receives ten points. Players who voted for wrong definition don't get any points.
Keep playing until you have gone through ten words. At the end, the player (and team) with the most points wins.
