Coin Geography

by Steve Bennett

coin.gifKids 7 and up indoor activity

Required:Map, pennies

What do you suppose four cents would buy? With Coin Geography, they just might pay for a trip around the world! Spread a large map of the world on the floor. Alternatively, you can draw a map on a sheet of kraft paper. Then designate a starting line -- say, a piece of string or a natural feature of the floor. Hand players four cents, and ask them to line up behind the starting line, one at a time, and pitch their pennies onto the map.

You decide what players should toss for in each round. They might see who can shoot the penny (or the most coins) that lands closest to a particular continent, the equator, a country that begins with the letter A, a place where it's cold in the summer, or the like.

Alternatively, you can play a national version of the game by using a United States map. Players can then shoot for particular cities, regions, or even your hometown. Or your kids can play the game regionally, using a map of their neighborhood. So who can pitch a penny that lands closest to your children's school?
