Halloween Treats: Recipes for Kids

'Tis the season for tricking-or-treating. If your family has that spooky spirit, they'll go for these delectably disgusting Halloween treats.

The Spurting Spider

  • 1 box flesh (basic cake mix)
  • 1 box innards (green JELL-O, prepared, set, and well whipped)
  • 1 batch skin (black frosting: buy at a craft supply store or make by adding blue food coloring to chocolate frosting)
  • 8 legs (black licorice sticks or whips)
  • 2 or 6 eyes (large green gumdrops)

Mix batter according to package instructions. Bake it in two metal bowls - one bigger than the other. Once unmolded, cut the bigger cake (the body) in half, horizontally. Carefully scoop out the cavity in each half. Fill with well-whipped, set green JELL-O, and reattach the halves. Frost it black and arrange on a serving platter, adding the legs and eyes. When the cake is cut into, it will ooze green guts - just like a real spider!

Add a red-frosting hourglass on top to make a black widow spider, or mix brown frosting and shredded coconut to make a tarantula.
