Happy Man

Rating:No Rating
Genre:Drama
Release Date:May 17, 2002

Description: An aimless man gains purpose but not maturity as he faces a family crisis. Jas (Piotr Jankowski) is an aspiring writer in his early thirties who lives at home with his mother Maria (Jadwiga Jankowska-Cieslak, who is out of work. During a routine visit with her doctor, Maria discovers she's contracted lung cancer and has a very short time to live; Maria decides not to tell Jas about her condition, and while he soon learns the truth, out of respect to his mother he pretends not to be aware of her illness. In hopes of making his mother happy in her last days, Jas finds a job and takes a large advance on his salary, which he squanders in order to make Maria comfortable. Jas also meets a woman named Marta (Malgorzata Chajewska-Krzysztofik), and begins dating her in an effort to make Maria happy, even going so far as to propose marriage. While he doesn't love her at first, as Jas gets to know Marta, he becomes increasingly fond of her, and her strong but upbeat manner is a tremendous tonic for Maria, though Jas isn't entirely aware how much of a difference she's making in their lives. Szczesliwy Czlowiek was the first feature film from writer and director Malgorzata Szumowska.~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
