The film opens with a David-and-Goliath battle that pits Maya Lin against powerful critics in a national controversy over her design of the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial. The story continues, set against a backdrop of KKK activities, with Maya's Civil Rights Memorial, and climaxes in the sculptural monument honoring women at Yale. The film comes full circle with a moving epilogue on the 10th anniversary of the dedication of the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial in Washington, D.C., attended by 100,000 Vietnam vets, including Vice President Al Gore.
