Make a Hanging Basket

Materials

• Hanging wire basket
• Sphagnum moss
• Potting soil
• Selected plants (see Note)

Directions

Hanging baskets of flowers provide lots of color throughout the summer and fall. A ten-inch basket will hold eight to twelve plants, depending on the varieties chosen.

1. Pack the sphagnum moss around the inside of the basket.
2. Soak in a deep basin or bucket.
3. Drain.
4. Half fill with moist potting soil.
5. Place taller plants in the center and spreading plants around the outside.
6. Fill with potting soil and press down firmly.
7. Water one more time before hanging.
8. As the plants grow, they will need more frequent watering.
9. Water until water runs out of the bottom.
10. Remove dead flowers by pinching them off at the stem.

Note: Hanging container plants include geranium, vinca, marigold, viscaria, petunia, begonia, phlox, verbena, nemesia, nasturtium, lobelia, portulaca, ivy, impatiens, creeping Charlie, snapdragon, alyssum, viola, artemesia, and godetia.
