A Parent's Guide to Poptropica

Are My Kids Safe Online?

Poptropica takes several steps to ensure the safety and security of your kids. The site is fully compliant with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, and in fact goes further than the law requires.

First, no personally identifying data is collected. To create a character, Poptropica asks first-time users for their age and gender. No other demographic information is either asked for, or stored on the site. Players do have the option to provide a parent's email address to be used for the sole purpose of resetting the account password in the event it is forgotten. Before this feature can be used, parents must verify their address through a hyperlink in an email.

Second, although Poptropica players can engage in head-to-head games and chat with one another, all player interaction is carefully controlled. This is accomplished primarily by the lack of a free-chat option. Players can choose from various pre-selected lines of dialogue in order to, for example, challenge others to a game. Unlike many other online social spaces, at no point can players freely type to one another to ask for or share personal information.
