This movie, set in 1930s Paris, tells the tale of a 12-year-old orphan named Hugo Cabret who lives in the walls of a train station. During the day, his job is to oil the clocks in the station, but when he isn't working, Hugo is focused on protecting the precious treasures — a mysterious notebook and spellbinding automaton that were left to him by his late father (played by Jude Law).
In order to understand the mystery surrounding his father, Hugo must figure out how to make the automaton work. With the help of the goddaughter of the local toy merchant, he sets out to solve his father's secret — and find a place he can finally call home.
