George(Jean-Louis Trintignant) and Anne (Emmanuelle Riva) are cultured music teachers and, now in their 80s, have long been enjoying retirement. When Anne suffers a stroke that leaves her partially paralyzed, George struggles with his new role as full-time caretaker for his incapacitated wife.
