2013 book, The Alchemist

The Alchemist

By Paulo Coelho

This international bestseller was first published in Portuguese in 1988 and has since been translated into 56 languages. It's back on readers' radars this summer because a film adaptation produced by Harvey Weinstein and starring Laurence Fishburne is coming out in 2014. The allegorical novel follows a Spanish shepherd boy who dreams one night of finding treasure in the pyramids of Egypt. He leaves on foot to pursue his dream, and encounters a wise alchemist in the desert who teaches him about understanding omens and following one's dreams. Under 200 pages, The Alchemist is a quick and spellbinding read.
