2012 Best Summer Books and Beach Reads, Salvage the Bones National Book Award Winner

Salvage the Bones

By Jesmyn Ward

The Boston Globe called this National Book Award Winner "the first great book about Katrina." As a major hurricane is brewing over the Gulf of Mexico, a 14-year-old pregnant girl, Esch, and her three brothers struggle to scrape together enough food for themselves and their new litter of pitbulls, dying one by one in the dirt. The motherless kids can't turn to their alcoholic and largely absent dad, so they must band together and make the best of their brutal life in a poor rural town in coastal Mississippi.
