Words du Jour
by Steve BennettAges: 8 and up
Materials: Writing materials, index cards
Each morning, your child designs a new vocabulary word flash card. First, he or she finds an unusual term in the dictionary and jots down some vitals on an index card, including the word's spelling, antonyms, synonyms, and part of speech. On the front of the card, your lexicographer adds an image based on the word. For example, to illustrate "humongous," your child might draw an arrow pointing to a skyscraper, with a tiny ant crawling on the side to show the scale.
At dinnertime, your child shows family members the front of the index card. Everyone has three chances to guess the new vocabulary word. Once the term is revealed, take turns seeing who can spell the word correctly, use it in a sentence, and suggest synonyms and antonyms. By the time dessert is served, your family should have fully digested the word-of-the-day special!
