The book is about a community where everything is planned. The place is perfect. Everyone is assigned a role in the community. When Jonas turns twelve he is assigned to be the receiver of memory. He is to take memories of the past from the giver and store them. He starts to learn that the world used to have color and loving families. He decides he doesn't like the community as it is and takes steps to get away.
