Estimated time required to make this costume:
1 to 1/2 hours

Difficulty level:
Quick and easy - no sewing required
Almost as easy - some sewing

Items you will need: (Hit your return key to start a new line)
old pair of jeans/overalls
old flannel shirt/plaid shirt
pieces of scrap fabric (patches)
old straw hat
raffia or paper ribbon (tan)
makeup, black eyeliner pencil

Instructions:
Glue or sew patches to various places on shirt and jeans.

Cut up pieces of raffia to look like straw, or unroll paper ribbon, and cut up pieces to look like straw...glue to pants legs (inside bottom of jeans) and to inside of flannel shirt sleeve to make it look like straw poking out...if you have some pockets in shirt and pants, glue additional "straw" poking out of it.

You can decorate straw hat...I've used big old silk flowers and I've also used crows you can buy at a craft store.

Next, paint face...outline eyes to look like triangles and paint it a bright color. You can also outline nose, if wanted...make some rosy red cheeks (two little circles). Then make a huge black smile on face, make sure lips are also black and then make lines going down the smile to make it look like stitch marks.

This costume really looks great! I've made this costume for adult friends, and one year all my kids went out as scarecrows. They all looked a bit different and unique...everyone loved them.
