Anti-government demonstrations gripped several countries in the Middle East in 2011, with protesters emboldened and inspired by actions in neighboring countries. The protests began in Tunisia and spread to Egypt, Bahrain, Libya, Iran, Yemen, Oman, Syria, and other countries. The unrest resulted in the downfall of embattled Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak, Tunisia's Gen. Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali, Libya's Col. Muammar al-Qaddafi, and Yemen's Ali Abdullah Saleh, and led to international sanctions against Syria's Bashar al-Assad. Read biographies of prominent figures in the Middle East, learn about the history of the countries in upheaval, and find international and political statistics.
